Matakana Road and Sandspit Road
Both roads will be upgraded from Hill Street to the edge of the future urban zone. The walking and cycling paths will improve access between the new residential zoning to the town centre helping to reduce the need for private vehicle trips for short distances. We’ll be integrating these improvements with the Hill Street improvements works to create a well-connected network.
We’re proposing to widen Matakana Road and Sandspit Road on both sides of the road from the Hill Street intersection to the edge of the future urban zone. Both Matakana and Sandspit Roads will be two traffic lanes (one in each direction) with a speed limit of 50km. There will also be separated, safe walking and cycling paths on both sides of the road.
Woodcocks Road
Woodcocks Road traverses a future urban area at its western end, through to an already urbanised area to the east. Upgrading a section of the road to include walking and cycling paths that connect key areas such as Mahurangi College and future schools will offer safe and sustainable ways to travel this route without a car.
We’re proposing to widen on both sides of the road from Mansel Drive to Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Wellsford motorway. This part of Woodcocks Road will have one lane in each direction with a speed limit of 50km. There will also be separated, safe walking and cycling paths on both sides of the road.
From the intersection at Mansel Drive to SH1, the existing road reserve will be used to accommodate a bi-directional cycle lane on the north side of the road to provide direct connections with schools and avoid existing commercial and industrial land. This part of the road will have a speed limit of 50km.
State Highway 1
When Ara Tūhono – the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway opens the role of the existing State Highway 1 will change.
Much of the existing traffic through Warkworth will shift from the current route and the Hill Street intersection in the central Warkworth township, allowing this part of the road to function as an urban arterial. That means it will become the main central route for public transport to connect local communities and town centres as well as the central spine for active transport choices to encourage safer cycling, and greater pedestrian access.
In the northern section, from Ara Tūhono – the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway to Hill Street, the existing road reserve space can be used to widen and improve walking and cycling facilities.
In the central section from Hill Street to Woodcocks Road, the existing road reserve space can be used to accommodate separated and safe walking and cycling paths on the western side of the road.
In the southern section from Woodcocks Road to the southern edge of the Future Urban Zone (FUZ), the road could be widened in some sections and separated, safe walking and cycling paths can be developed on both sides of the road.
All sections of SH1 from Hudson Road to the south will continue to have two lanes for vehicles and buses. There will be intersection widening at key intersections.
We’ll be working with Auckland Transport to integrate our planning for State Highway 1 with the Hill Street intersection improvements project.
