Great South Road Frequent Transit Network (FTN) Route

The proposed FTN bus route will use Great South Road. The road may be widened in some locations to accommodate a new frequent bus route in both directions and walking and cycling improvements from Drury (Drury Central Train station) to Manukau (Manukau Bus Station).

The Great South Road FTN route will provide users access to Papakura centre and train station, Takaanini town centre, Te Mahia Station, Manurewa town centre and train station, and Manukau town centre, train and bus stations.

While we don’t know exactly how the road layout will look quite yet, we are proposing new bus lanes for large sections of the network. This will mean bus passengers will enjoy a faster and more direct journey. Walking and cycling improvements will mean that people will have more options about how they travel for some or all of their journey.

The route will connect with the rail network, giving people greater access to the places they want to go – like home, school, work and recreational activities.

Typically, FTN bus routes operate with a 15-minute or greater bus frequency, making them efficient, direct, and attractive to users.

Who will use the Great South Road Frequent Transit Network (FTN) Route?

Atamai Moala from Clendon is a Produce Manager at a Supermarket in Papakura.

Atamai can use the Great South Road FTN bus route because it’ll be so reliable. She starts work at 7am in the morning and is always home by 3pm for her kids, for when they get home from school.

Once the new FTN is running, her bus journey will be direct from Manurewa to Papakura. And then she can get her steps up by walking the short distance from home and work to catch the bus.

Abir Parāone is student from Papakura who is studying engineering at MIT.

Abir Parāone is a student from Papakura who is studying engineering at MIT. He’ll use the Great South Road FTN bus route because it will be an affordable and direct way for him to travel.

Abir can get directly from his home to uni, and use the time travelling to plan his day and because the bus route ends near MIT, he can walk the rest of the way.

During previous consultation, the community told us that they want more transport choices like improved public transport and better walking and cycling options.

To achieve this, we will reallocate existing space within the road and there may be a need to widen existing roads in some areas.

The need to widen roads reflects our expectations for the arterial roads in the future, including improved public transport options, much better walking and cycling and using modern design standards that focus on safety and sustainability.
